Victorian Horror

Captain’s log:  Final August Entry.
We’ve been lost at sea for several weeks, and the food has run out.  We ate one of Mr. Smee’s legs last night.  The galley cook was prescient enough to have stashed away some Mrs. Lawry’s Pork Rub, and once worked into the flesh, it was actually quite tasty.  We also gained news via very worn out mechanical carrier pigeon, alerting us to the fact that there is a serial killer abroad in our beloved London Town.  They’re calling the murderer “Jack the Ripper”, though I can’t see why.  It’s not like he rips anything.  His cuts are precise, as if done by a scalpel.  Could this killer be a surgeon?  Aren’t all doctors in Victorian England really butchers in disguise?  I know I’ve never trusted them. . .

The theme tonight was Victorian Horror, in honor of the anniversary of Jack the Ripper’s first victim.  I’m not sure how many songs held to the theme; it seems people were requesting whatever popped into their heads.  This isn’t a bad thing, exactly, though I did get a request for voodoo jazz (whatever that may be), and some classical music.  I apologize, but I really know nothing about jazz, apart from the fact that it may involve a saxophone.  And I love classical music, but it can be a challenge to work a good fugue into what started off as an electronic and New Wave set.

Adult Party

I seem to be getting a bit forgetful in my dottering old age lately, because I have been neglecting these play lists terribly.  Okay, so I have an excuse:  I didn’t really feel like typing this out.  No, really.  It’s pretty difficult to believe, I know, but shiny things keep distracting your humble narrator, O my droogs and only friends.

Besides the usual drudgery of workaday life, I got mired in watching the old Monkees TV series again.  It turned out those four guys weren’t so bad.  In fact, some of them were rather talented song writers, and that Micky guy really had a distinctive voice.  I should really make more of an effort to inflict the songs of the Monkees on my listeners.  To be fair, I did do a bit of it in this play list.

People were horrified when I mentioned I was playing a popular boy band of its day.  Accusations flew.  OH MY GOD, IF YOU PLAY MENUDO I WILL HURT YOU!  Please tell me when it’s on, so I can turn off the stream.  You know, things like that.  So when the Monkees came on, there was a collective sigh of relief from the huddled masses, and phrases like, “I LOVE the Monkees!” wafted through the aether.

So here you go:

Calling All Astronauts – I Wanna Be Your Dog
B Movie – Nowhere Girl

Balaam and the Angel – Light of the World
Ghost Dance – The Grip of Love (A Cheaper Blues Version)

HP Lovecraft Birthday Party, Part 2

Yeah.  HP Lovecraft’s birthday was on August 21, though Google didn’t see fit to give him a doodle.  It’s too bad, since we could have had a creeping horror doodle with tentacles.  You have to love tentacles.  Speaking of which, The Village was full of tentacles during the Party Mark II.

I ended up starting the stream a half hour early because people were already showing up.  By the time the party started for real, we had 34 avatars dancing in the graveyard, and yet the sim managed not to crash, or even lag terribly.  There were unnamed horrors dancing, along with the usual assortment of crazy clothes, tuxedos, gowns, and demons.  At one point I had two Deep Ones flopping around on either side of me.

This set is all over the place, though I tried to keep it focused.  Requests, for the most part, are honored every time.  There are exceptions.  Like Frank Zappa.  Sorry, Zappa fans, but when I have a high-energy set going, the last thing I want to play is Zappa’s particular brand of stoner jazz.  He’s great and all, but rarely fits.  The one time I did play a request for Zappa, I had to cut off the song midway because it was driving people to turn off the stream, and I can’t have that.

This party ran just under three hours.  By the end, there were a half dozen die hards, and I was getting hungry.  So the intense need to devour the blood and haunches of 1000 virgins was just too much, and I had to get offline.  I get bitey and grouchy when faced with No Food.

HP Lovecraft is celebrating a birthday posthumously on Tuesday.  The Village of Nyght, sitting on the Lovecraftian sim of Dunwich, naturally sees this as an excuse to have a party.  They’re celebrating most of the week, in fact, and there will be a party DJd by yours truly on Tuesday at 5pm slt.

Tonight’s weekly party was Part 1 of the Great Lovecraft Birthday Celebration.  We had the usual crowd of misfits and tentacles.  I dressed up as the most horrifying thing I could think of:  half a clown.  Those mesh clown pants really came in handy tonight

Chuckmatrix Art Show Opening
Wednesday, August 14
Inner Prisons

A while back, my friend at Gallery Graine needed someone to play a Gothic set for an art show opening.  The artist, Chuckmatrix, is quite an amazing builder in Second Life, and his 3D works are stunning, though he appears to work only in regular prims, rather than sculpt or mesh.  His sculptures are pretty high in prims, but they are simply amazing to behold.  If you have the prim allotment, he’s got a fantastic dragon statue I drooled over the first time I DJ’d for one of his shows.  If I had the prims to spare, that dragon would be sitting proudly at my store, because I love dragons.  A lot.

Chuck was apparently pretty impressed by my mad DJ skills, not to mention my crazy music collection and knowledge of music.  So when his latest show opened, he asked the gallery owner to hire me for the Grand Opening Party.

It was a pretty wild mix of avatars.  Unfortunately, I did have to derender one of them completely, because she kept throwing on these wearable items that obscured my view and threatened to crash me.  She was quite a character, and kind of fun to interact with, in spite of it all.  Insane, you might say.  Which was apropos, as the Art Installation is all about Insanity.  The party was in the waiting room of an asylum.  I was glad my friend Madison could come hang out with me, since she was a welcome breath of fresh (and sane) air.  Every DJ needs someone they can talk to in IM in a crazy situation. Really.

The playlist started off kind of oddly, and ended up being an 80s fest when people figured out I not only have every 80s song worth having, but even more 80s songs they didn’t know were worth having and are!

Some of the songs may be out of order.  My history on SAM appears to be all jumbled for some reason.

The Vapors – Galleries for Guns
Siouxsie & the Banshees – Kiss Them For Me (Snapper Mix)
Blaqk Audio – Stiff Kittens
Blancmange – Living on the Ceiling (12″ extended mix)

N00b Party

I missed a couple of weeks of DJing recently, due to real life rearing its ugly head at various people.  Though the Village, which is my regular haunt, has been a tad quiet of late, I did DJ a Rezday party for my friend Lewis.  He and Madison threw a fantastic n00b party at Club Noir, complete with particles, various weapons and thing launchers, bling, fullbright, and high prim couches.  I even set down a museum piece:  n00b freenis under glass.  It was quite n00btastic.

I’m happy about one thing:  Only one person requested a n00b DJ song, and it wasn’t one of the Trifecta of Evil™.  I’ve got a nice streak going with no requests for Crazy Bitch, Bodies, and Bilingual.  I’d like to keep it that way for a while longer.

In the aftermath of exploding n00b body parts, exploding Daleks, and sim lagging particles (thankfully no gestures), I managed to get some music played.

Without further ado:
Gene Loves Jezebel – Motion of Love
The Flirts – Jukebox (Don’t Put Another Dime)
