World Goth Day

World Goth Day was a pretty special event at Gothika’s Mobile Unit today, with about 14 hours of live DJs playing all sorts of music for the Dark-Clad Gothic People.  I was asked to play a set when one of the regular DJs couldn’t make that time slot, so of course I said, “Absolutely, yes!”

All the proceeds of tips, gachas, and shops on the Cursed sim and the Port Seraphine sim are going to the Sophie Lancaster Foundation on June 1.  When I last peeked at the numbers, this event had raised over 600,000L!  I want to thank everyone who hung out, because I know most of you had been there for hours already.  You folks are fantastic, and you’re the ones making this the most successful World Goth Fair Second Life has seen!

Pope Moo kindly offered to host for me, so I gave him the gift of the final song.  Surprisingly, the man who has consistently requested Doctor Demento songs played only once in 1984 on some obscure basement tape only the good Doctor owns had never heard the final song.  I have to admit I was floored.  I’ll also admit that my set wasn’t strictly all Goth, because, well…I’ve never really been able to pull off a straight genre set.  I’m afflicted with a musical restlessness that requires a bit of variety.  So Bowie happened, as did the final song for Moo.  That said, here’s the play list.

Gary Numan – The Fall
The Leather Nun – Gimme Gimme Gimme

The Village of Nyght
Goth Night

We skipped last week due to illness.  It wasn’t my illness.  The owner of the sim has had the Martian Death Plague for a really long time, and she’s possibly been cursed by a Gypsy.  I’m not sure.  However, in spite of her lingering creeping crud, she decided we couldn’t put off this week’s party, since World Goth Day is coming up, and she always likes to have a pure Goth party about this time of year.

Of course, I suggest Goth parties a lot because, frankly, I like playing Goth music.  A lot.

I had some folks show up who haven’t been to the Village ever, which was great.  There were also the usual crowd of misfits and lifers there, which I always welcome.  Heck, I’m happy if only one person shows up, as long as the conversation is good.  With a lot of people, it can be even more fun.

This was also the anniversary of Ian Curtis’ death, so there’s quite a lot of Joy Division.

This set was three hours of straight Goth.  Or as Goth as Goth can be in Second Life.

Sisters of Mercy – This Corrosion
You Shriek – Adrenochrome
Gary Numan – The Fall
Epochate – Needle Hive
The Smiths – The Boy With the Thorn in his Side

Lewis and Madison’s Second Anniversary
Club Noir

I do occasional parties for folks who ask; weddings, anniversaries, and the odd charity event.  I don’t do them often, but if I have time I will.

When Madison asked me to DJ her Second Anniversary party (she and Lewis have a really special thing going), there was no question that I would go for it.  Generally, I ask folks if they have any special songs or favorite artists, and go from there.  This party was no exception.  Two days after being asked to do the party, I was sent a note card of musical choices and favorite artists roughly as long as your arm.  The good thing is I had nearly all the music being asked of me already.  There were a couple of exceptions, and I think I missed one or two (mainly due to time constraints).  But all in all, I’m happy with how this set came together.  I will mention here that all songs in bold were requested by Lewis or Madison.  They also gave me a list of artists they really like.  Those artist names are bolded, but the songs in regular font are DJ choice.

By the way, I recommend you check out Club Noir.  It’s a fantastic looking jazz club; built in monochrome, and definitely a place for fans of 30s and 40s jazz.  The only thing missing is the nightclub singer draped over the piano.

The list:
Echo & the Bunnymen – Bring on the Dancing Horses
Howard Jones – Everlasting Love
U2 – New Year’s Day
Dean Martin – Sway
Billie Holiday – Love Is Here To Stay
Linda Ronstadt – I’ve Got a Crush on YOu

The Apocalypse
Village of Nyght

There is absolutely no rest for the wicked.  This especially rings true when you accidentally sign up for two gigs back to back, plus a third the next day.  As a rule, I try not to set myself up for more than one gig a week.  This is mostly due to having an attention span the size of a flea, and having a ton of other things that demand my attention.  Plus, I like to make sure music mixes together fairly well with room for the odd request.

The party was lightly attended, but Second Life has been lightly attended lately.  Still, a few good friends showed up, and we had a great time.  There are several requests that were inferred, since the sometime host made mention of a few bands she hasn’t heard in a while.  If you’ve ever been to any of the parties where I DJ, you know that when you mention something in local chat, chances are I will probably play it.  This is a pattern, yet it never ceases to surprise those who end up getting a whole slew of songs they love without even directly asking for them.  Most of the requests were requests for the artists.  I chose the songs.

So, without further ado, here’s the playlist from the Village of Nyght.

The Sex Pistols – Rock Around the Clock
Echo & the Bunnymen – Never Stop
Tears for Fears – Watch Me Bleed
Siouxsie & the Banshees – Cities in Dust (Extended Mix)

How the Mighty Have Fallen
Graine’s Gallery and Garden

I did something I almost never do:  I set myself up for three gigs in one weekend.  Since I run a store, and have abuot 14 projects going at any one time, DJing can sometimes distract me from the pandemonium in my head.  I enjoy DJing immensely, so it’s not torture, or anything.  Plus, I get to play pretty much what I want most of the time anyway, so it’s a great chance to listen to music and hang with friends.

Graine approached me the other day, saying one of her DJs backed out on an art show opening at her place, and could I please fill in.  She apologized for the last minute notice, but really, it wasn’t.  Last minute notice, to me, is, “OH MY GOD!  I NEED A DJ RIGHT NOW!!! CAN YOU DO IT?? PLEASE?!?!!”  However, it’s nice when people are considerate about these things.  Naturally, I said Yes.  Particularly since the artist showing his work requested dark and Gothic.  Now that I can do!

So, my moon children, here’s the set from the first of the parties on Saturday:

The Bolshoi – Crack in Smile
The Vapors – Spiders
The Merry Thoughts – Glory Boys
The Mission – Evangeline
Q. Lazzarus – Goodbye Horses

The Cure – Burn
*** REQUEST *** Inkubus Sukkubus  – Beltaine
The Merry Thoughts – Dreamland
