In the Depths of Mania – The Die Form Suit and a Pair of Shoes

Die Form is German for Form or Shape. I’m sure Florian, or any of my other friends well-versed in German could confirm this, or at least correct this if I’m completely wrong.  Die Form is also a post-industrial dark electronic band that formed out of France sometime in the late 70s, and continues today.  If you really want to dive deeper into some sort of meaning here, it’s also a play on words, a splitting of the word, “Deform”.  It’s kind of like how DEVO is short for De-Evolution, only somehow more austere and Goth.

When making a Goth outfit for Second Life, one must come up with a clever name, based on something out of the Goth subculture.  Most of the time, creators pick out words in a song lyric, or just use the title of a song that strikes their fancy.  In the case of this outfit, it seemed rather fitting (heh) to use the name of an entire band.  I’m sure they won’t mind, particularly as it’s an actual German phrase anyway.

“Inspiration is a cat.  It never comes when you call it, but when it does finally wander in you’d better pay attention, or it’ll claw your leg pretty hard.”

While casting around for inspiration, a thought hit me:  Why not update something that got made in the past and make it better?  Yeah, except I’m kind of done with those older designs.  Let them fester on the Marketplace for folks who are still interested in buying system clothing with prim attachments.  There’s nothing wrong with that, mind you.  The texturing on those outfits is still pretty darn good.  But honestly, I’ve been on a mesh kick for a while now, and nearly the whole Second Life store (you know, the one inworld) has been nearly completely converted to mesh things.  Then I thought, “Well, Vintage things work really well for the whole Goth look.”  That’s when the epiphany hit:  MIX THE STYLES!  Seriously, there’s nothing wrong with mixing historic and Vintage and whatever else, as long as the ensemble works, right?  Real Life fashion designers do this all the time, to varying effects and degrees.

So Die Form was born.  This is a heavily brocaded Pseudo Edwardian Jacket with a bit of a modern Versace flare.  The coat has medium lapels, and a single silver button closes it in the front.  The velvet coat layers over a silken black narrow collared shirt, and a darkly jewel-toned satin neck tie.  The ensemble ties together with a pair of pleated herringbone pants.

Die Form, like all rigged mesh at Avatar Bizarre, has a free demo available.  Available in several colors, it’s materials enabled for your viewing pleasure, and includes five standard sizes.  My avatar (the one shown, naturally) is a medium.  The cost for this fashion feast is 375L per color.

saddle shoes two

No suit would be complete without a nice pair of shoes.  Although shoes do not come with the actual suit, Avatar Bizarre has just released this nifty pair of Saddle Shoes (unisex) with a color HUD.  The HUD includes eight colors:  Black, Silver, Brown, Red, Green, Blue, Teal, and Purple. The shoes themselves were built for SLink flat feet, but there’s also a pair of shoes to fit the system avatar feet.  An alpha is included for the system feet, and these shoes have been materials enhanced.  They are also modify and copy, and unrigged so you can easily resize them as needed.  The cost for the shoes is 175L.

In such an early song…” D. Bowie, Ashes to Ashes

 Grabilla screen capture:

Walk the Night With Me is a Gothic event coming up in Second Life in July.  Organized by the team from Hidden Sanctuary Events, the theme centers on Gothic Weddings and Tragic Gothic Romance.  The theme conjures up all kinds of inspiration for your humble narrator, my droogs and devotchkas.

Ashe is a lonely wanderer, clad in velvet brocade.  This suit hearkens back to Victorian times, but adds a little Tim Burtonesque twist with the black and white striped lining of the coat.  This is a rigged mesh suit, which comes complete with five sizes, an alpha, and attached coat and pants.  It has been materials enabled for your viewing pleasure.

 Grabilla screen capture:

Ashe will be available only at the event, till its end, then will be available on the Marketplace, and inworld at the main store location.

As the time draws near, and booth set up is imminent, an SLurl will be provided so you can hop on over for a bit of Gothic awesomeness.  Stay tuned!

HSe Walk the night with me_ A Gothic wedding affair 7_18-7_22

Walk the Night With Me is a Hidden Sanctuary Event centered around all things Gothic Wedding and Dark Love.  It takes place July 18th through the 23rd, and will feature all things dark and sticky.  A Gothic Wedding is one that evokes romance with a Victorian flare.

Avatar Bizarre is thrilled to be a part of this event, and will be debuting two new items, which will exclusive at the event until its end, then they will be released to the Marketplace and in the Main Store location afterwards.  The first of these items is the Evelyn, pictured above.  This gown is a lovely Victorian-style garment with a black leather corset, frilly black lace accents at the throat and the wrists, and sumptuous puffed sleeves.  The floor-length skirt is slim, and drapes gorgeously, ending in a lovely sweep on the floor.  The tiny hat adds that Brontean touch, and is finished off with black lace attached to the brim.

As always, all rigged mesh items can be tried on with a handy free DEMO.  This is available in six colors, and includes five sizes and the hat.

Unhallowed Metropolis – Phinaea Suit

 Grabilla screen capture:

In a city, dark and eerie, surrounded by the Vernian Wastelands, a lone figure emerges from the increasing fog in a final showdown…

She gazes unblinkingly at the menacing Dirigible of Doom, flown by her mortal arch-nemesis, a mad man bent on destroying the whole of civilization for his own nefarious gain. Reaching for the weapon in her coat, a powerful electrically charged object designed by Nicola Tesla himself, she takes aim and fires.  The white-hot lightning projects from the muzzle, hitting the dirigible, enveloping it in a blaze so super heated that a shock wave from the explosion could be felt for several hundred meters.  Phinaea remains stoic, unflinching, as her hair is blown back by the shockwave.  The war machine of her arch nemesis seems to drift lazily to the ground, supports and beams floating gently in all directions.  She bends down to retrieve her top hat, wipes a film of dust and soot from the goggles, and wanders off…

Phinaea is the counterpart to the mad men of the Steam age; a woman of strength, who is highly intelligent, yet lives in a Patriarchal society that values beauty over brains.  She works in secret as an agent of Artifact Recovery, seeking out devices and strange items imbued with magical properties, many of which are highly dangerous in any hands.  She is an author, using a famous pseudonym to publish her very real adventures as fiction.  She is Phinaea.

The suit worn by the Inventor, Author, and Adventurer is a twist on a previous release from Avatar Bizarre.  The Phinaea is rigged mesh that has been materials enhanced, and includes a full suit with pocket chain, and a high top hat with tintable goggles.

Become the adventurer you always wanted to be, and do it in style with this beautifully crafted outfit, made from the finest mesh velvet brocade, and lovingly stitched with the strongest of pixel threads.  The sleeves and pants cuffs were made to accommodate SLink hands and feet.  As with all things at Avatar Bizarre, this ensemble is available in several stunning colors.  Available inworld and on the Marketplace.

Around the Grid in Eighty Days – or – How Phinaeus Got His Groove Back (Sneak Preview)

 Grabilla screen capture: 2015-05-27 19:29:53

One of the wonderful things about Second Life is an abundance of Science Fiction and Fantasy fans inworld building things for role play and other stuff.  When you throw together a virtual world where you can build anything you want, and a few thousand rabid fans of various genres, your imagination really is the limit, and you end up with some wonderful things to find and explore.  If you set foot in this virtual world, you could end up cavorting under the waves with mermaids, flying through the air in World War I Sopwith Camels and Fokker Triplanes, running with dragons at Avaria, or you could even end up on the deck of a Steampunk Dirigible in Caledon.

Of course if one ends up in the Steamlands, one must be properly attired.  To the layman, if you just slap a few gears on something, you can call it “Steampunk”, but the genre goes much, much deeper than that.  Steampunk rose from the World of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells in the 19th century.  Loosely based in Victorian times, Steampunk is the science and the imagination of that era.  From the mighty flying dirigible to the whimsical fighting trousers, Steampunk encompasses a vast range of wearable doo dads and clothing, in addition to some spectacular vehicles and buildings.

For Steampunk clothing, you can’t go wrong with a frock coat and pin striped pants, or a corset and puffed sleeve gown.  Add a pair of goggles and some clockwork jewelry and you’re well on your way to immersing yourself in a wonderful whimsy of imagination.  Let your flight of fancy begin…!

 Grabilla screen capture: 2015-05-27 19:30:53

“But Mr. Eel,” you might say, “What’s up with this Phinaeus character in your blog title?  Wasn’t the hero in Around the World in Eighty Days called Phileas?”  Well, you do have a keen eye and a great memory for literature.  The thing is, I actually kind of forgot this till the suit was already made and Phinaeus was already mired in my brain.  Plus it turns out there’s a King Phineus in Greek Mythology, who appeared in the voyages of the Argonauts.  So I mixed up my literature a bit…the suit’s still pretty cool!

The Phinaeus is a classically styled psuedo Victorian suit, made from the finest virtual velvet and delicately stitched and rigged to fit the most stalwart male avatar.  It’s available in five sizes and several colors.  The suit is all one piece and includes the coat, waistcoat, turtleneck, and pants.  The finely detailed frock coat is beautifully accessorized with a silver chain.  Not shown here, because I hadn’t uploaded it when the pictures were taken, is a wonderful tall top hat, which is one part Mad Hatter and two parts Wide Bell Top Hat.  For a little extra flavor, this outfit has been materials enhanced.

This suit is perfect for Steampunks, Goths, Vampires, or whoever wishes to include a classic dark almost-Victorian flare to their wardrobe.  The cost is 450L and includes the hat.  Shoes are not included.

A bit after the release date, the jacket/waistcoat combo will be available as a standalone garment, with a color HUD that includes all the Phinaeus colors.  TBA.

Available NOW on the marketplace and inworld at Avatar Bizarre.

Edit:
This top hat comes with the suit.  The goggle lenses have a touch menu to change the color.

Once Halloween comes to a screeching halt, all Hell breaks loose as we gear up for one of the biggest holiday events in Second Life:  Gothmas!  Whatmas?  Gothmas!  It’s that black and romantic time when all the darklings come out of the woodwork and celebrate in a weird and wonderful way.  We don our goth apparel and dance to the ethereal carols of Pretentious, Moi?, Sisters of Mercy, Imperative Reaction, and Thoushaltnot.

Gothmas by Gaslight is nigh, and as you wander the hallowed streets of the cursed countryside, you will be regaled with many fine Gothic wares from a wide swath of merchants across the Second Life grid.

It’s time once again to give those blackened blue eyes an advance look at what’s coming up from Avatar Bizarre during this most sacred of holidays.

“Ozymandias Female” – Modeled by Misha-Selene

The Ozymandias, named for the poem by Percy Bisshe Shelley is resplendent in six gorgeous jewel tones.  Although it is a simple outfit with leather pants, silken shirt, and waistcoat, you will look positively stunning in any of the hues.  This outfit is available for men and for women, and the sleeves and pants are materials enhanced.  Shoes are not included, but both pants and sleeves were made to accommodate SLink hands, and SLink boots.

Gothmas opens in December, and both versions of this outfit will be available for 250L.  Please try the demo before you buy.

Weird Science – A Tattered Page, Victor Frankenstein, and Second Life

https://i1.wp.com/grabilla.com/04a11-f28e7c61-da30-4d37-9915-da45c47f1f75.png

There’s a new event coming to Second Life, run by some experienced hands.  It’s one of those events that uses a particular theme to inspire the merchants to come up with something relevant, amazing, and literally literary.  It’s A Tattered Page [*citation needed].

It looks like this event will occur a few times a year, with each theme focusing on one amazing book that everyone should read at least once in their lives.  We will be off and running with Mary Wollstoncraft Shelley’s original mad scientist epic, Frankenstein.  This is not about the movie adaptations, TV shows, cliff’s notes, or even the Abbott and Costello/Boris Karloff Halloween mask.  This is the book that started it all; a short rollercoaster of a novel about a man, his obsession, and a creature.  Anyone involved in the event who hasn’t read it has to read it.  Yep, we have homework!

This is an in-store event, so all items will be sold in individual stores with at least one exclusive item that you can only get during the event.

This one’s right up my alley, since I love to make historic clothing.  What I wasn’t prepared for was the fact that the book is set in the late 1700s.  Okay, I tell a slight lie.  I kind of knew.  I also love, love, love making that stuff.  This is also a great opportunity to expand my mesh clothing line to include female clothing items.  I won’t lie:  It’s been a little scary to try making women’s clothing.  Now that I have, it seems I did okay.

So here’s a sneak preview of the two items I will be debuting for the event…

Let’s talk about the Elizabeth gown.

https://i0.wp.com/grabilla.com/04a11-6bdc471e-5f99-4d85-b692-ed4ed9b217d2.png

This lovely number will be available in ten colors and five sizes.  It’s a casual (for the time) gown, circa 1790, modeled by the beautiful Misha Selene.  There’s a demo available, of course, and it will cost 250L.  The exclusive color is called “Blood”, and is a gown resplendent in black and red.

Elizabeth Lavenza was the love interest for Victor Frankenstein.  She was adopted as a young girl by Victor’s parents, and raised as a “cousin” figure.  She was beautiful, and gentle.

https://i0.wp.com/grabilla.com/04a11-77d7354d-97b2-4c70-8ba5-a50b521b6d71.png

The other item being offered for this event is a later style, perhaps very early 1800s, suit.  It will be available in seven colors, and five sizes.  It is a rigged mesh suit with unrigged top hat, cravat and shoes.  There is a demo available.  There will be an exclusive color for this one as well, but it’s still being decided which one.  More than likely there will be an eighth color added just for the event.

A Tattered Page begins November 7, and these items will be available at Avatar Bizarre at that time.

A Spritely Suit – Julenisse Strikes Again!

A couple of years ago, Avatar Bizarre created a suit called “Julenisse” for an event called Gothmas by Gaslight, which may have been a grid-wide hunt at the time.  It is now a shopping event.  Anyway, inspired by the Scandinavian sprite that takes care of farm and livestock over the Christmas holiday, the original suit was elegant in its simplicity.  It was not only colorful, but sported a bit of a Harlequin coloring:  a sort of half n’ half, resplendent in greens, blues, purples, reds, blacks, and teals.

If you’re looking for the original system layer suit, it’s still available at a discount on the Marketplace.

Julenisse is resplendent in red, blue, teal, black, green, and purple, but there’s also a limited edition group discounted Technicolor version available for 25L.  It won’t last long, so get your copy now!

https://i2.wp.com/grabilla.com/04707-36b4195e-8e7f-4d7f-800b-f326c2380c2d.png

Each package includes five sizes of rigged jacket/pant/dickie, along with a pair of unrigged boots that can be resized, if needed.  There’s also a couple of alphas for good measure.  This may fit custom mesh avatars, though it was built on a classic avatar shape.  Please try the demo before you buy!

This is a wonderful way to spruce up your wardrobe, adding some color and flair to your dynamic look.

In the Summertime

https://i1.wp.com/grabilla.com/0451f-1439dc08-11fe-4ebc-87f1-e63dc06bbe69.png

Back in the good old days, circa sometime between Victorian times and the early 20th century, beachwear was stunningly attractive, easy to swim in, and made from fabulously heat resistant wool.  Men and women alike daringly showed off their ankles and elbows.  It was quite the love-fest on the beaches of yesteryear, I can tell you!

Avatar Bizarre has long been one of the major providers for Vintage and Historic clothing in Second LIfe and, while there remains a system layer version of the 1900’s Men’s Bathing Costume, it was finally time to dive into the deep end of Mesh to bring you — Yes, you guessed it:  The Mesh 1920s Men’s Bathing Costume!

Like most things mesh attire, this amazing bit of wooly swimwear comes in the five standard sizes, and includes a straw Panama hat, because no man should wander about outside bareheaded.  That’s just barbaric!  Oh, and you get an alpha layer, as well.  But we don’t talk about male underthings.  That’s just crass.

This item is available on the Marketplace and in Second Life at the Avatar Bizarre main store location for a mere 150L.  It should fit custom mesh avatars, in addition to the classic Second Life avatar.  But “should” is a funny word.  Please try the demo before you buy the costume.  I’d be much obliged.

The Dickens, You Say! Ghost of Marley

https://i0.wp.com/grabilla.com/03b0c-8f674f3e-1014-4449-a814-c3f9f91492eb.png

A Christmas Carol is a novella by English author Charles Dickens, first published by Chapman & Hall on 19 December 1843. The story tells of bitter and miserly Ebenezer Scrooge’s ideological, ethical, and emotional transformation resulting from supernatural visits from Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come. The novella met with instant success and critical acclaim.

The book was written and published in early Victorian Era Britain, a period when there was both strong nostalgia for old Christmas traditions and an initiation of new practices such as Christmas trees and greeting cards. Dickens’s sources for the tale appear to be many and varied but are principally the humiliating experiences of his childhood, his sympathy for the poor, and various Christmas stories and fairy tales.

The tale has been viewed by critics as an indictment of 19th-century industrial capitalism. It has been credited with restoring the holiday to one of merriment and festivity in Britain and America after a period of sobriety and somberness. A Christmas Carol remains popular, has never been out of print, and has been adapted to film, stage, opera, and other media multiple times. – From Wikipedia

Jacob Marley’s Ghost wanders the grid for the first time, in search of retribution from a bitter old miser.  Charles Dickens’ classic story, A Christmas Carol, has come to life in movies, television, song, Broadway, and now Second Life!  Inspired by a sincere plea from the builder of this year’s Dickens installation, the Ghost of Marley is a classic spectral outfit with glowing chains and a glowing cravat for that ethereal spirit appearance during the Holiday season.  This outfit is part of a growing Dickens collection available from Avatar Bizarre.  If Marley isn’t your style, there’s an outfit based on Ebenezer Scrooge, and a suit based on Bob Cratchitt, both available inworld and on the marketplace.
