2013 – The April Playlists

April 26 – Village of Nyght
Fantasy

Captain’s Log, final entry of the month.  Star Date 1326.4
We’ve been in orbit around this graveyard for a while now, and it’s desolate.  So desolate.  The last couple of weeks have been a little on the lonely side at the Village of Nyght, with light crowds, and not so much interaction.  I don’t mind too much, as long as it doesn’t happen all the time.  After all, when it’s seriously slow, I can stick my nose in Photoshop during songs if I really need to keep myself entertained.

It was a light crowd, but a few die-hards appeared, and one of my best DJ friends turned up and we talked music.  Actually, it’s more of a major music geekery fest when she turns up, because we talk labels, band members, where people are from. and what the songs mean to us, and all that malarkey.  She’s astounded that I can play some of the more mainstream music, but appreciates that I know enough about the music to make it seem kind of obscure.

It’s a nice compliment and I’m going to run with it.  After all, here we have a DJ who prefers to play the synthpop of the 80s, EBM, occasional industrial, and a whole lot of Goth, so playing some of the more mainstream requests can be a trifle painful at times.  But, I’m not playing the music for me.  I’m playing it for the audience.  Generally, if it’s a song I can at least tolerate, I will play it, because if someone asks, they obviously really like it.  Of course, I try to find a spot in the set where the request will fit.  Musical speed bumps can be a bit painful.

However, I do have my limits.  There are artists I will not play.  Not now, not ever.  In this case, the needs of the one outweigh those who have musical taste that differs wildly from my own.   I have also been banned from playing Black Lace’s Agadoo.  I was not threatened with divorce, but I was told I’d be murdered in my sleep.  Yeah, sometimes real life does rear its head and can bite rather hard.

April 20 – Village of Nyght
Dystopian Sci Fi

It isn’t often I do two sets in as many days.  It isn’t that I don’t like to DJ.  I love it.  But Inspiration hits at the most inopportune times, so I found myself chomping at the bit thinking about things to make for my store as I played music for my friends.

This week’s party was a theme suggested by your humble narrator.  Second Life clubs so often go for “Best in (fill in the blank), or “Cum as UR” (whatever that is), so I have this allergic reaction to the usual malarkey.  Dystopian Sci Fi, the darker side of human nature with robots and famine, typically, is rife with many great movies, so I figured it would be a great idea for a theme.  Besides, there’s some really fun music in the theme.

It just goes to show that sometimes you end up with the best laid plans of mice and men.  The party was lightly attended, though a couple of very old friends made an appearance, which gave me a warm fuzzy.  And the conversation was great fun.  So I really can’t complain.  Nobody would listen anyway.

So, without further ado, or pomp and circumstance, and stuff, here’s the playlist:

Sredni Eel Intro

April 19 – Slugfest at Shoggy’s Tavern

Candace Bethune approached me for a spot of DJing at Shoggy’s at the Arkham sim.  If you haven’t been to Arkham or to Dunwich, it’s probably time you’ve gone.  Especially if you are into H.P.Lovecraft and the turn of the century.  There’s horror to be had, people!

The party wasn’t well attended, mostly because there’s so much other stuff going on during the festival.  Our party coincided with a massive paintball tournament, and the grand opening of the Fantasy Fair elsewhere on the grid.  I’m okay with that, however, as I was feeling a bit headache-riddled, and the low-key atmosphere did wonders.

Here’s the playlist:

Echo & the Bunnymen – The Game
A Flock of Seagulls – Ordinary Man
Magazine – Shot By Both Sides

April 13 – Saturday at the Village of Nyght

I opened my big mouth to the Dunwich sim owner and told her that my birthday is on the 16th, so I was going to play whatever the heck I wanted.  She said, “Okay, that’s fine.  Then you can come up with this week’s theme.”

After some contemplation and head scratching, I sent her a message that “Subculture Clash” would make for a fun theme.  I had no idea what it meant, but since themes left open to interpretation tend to be pretty p0pular (unless they’re dismal failures), I figured we could work with this somehow.  Of course, it was all a diabolical plan by which I get people to accept that there was no way I would play anything truly heinous.  Like Celine Dion.  Then again, anyone who knows me knows I don’t have anything from that girl in my collection.  I have a severe allergy, you see…

Thanks to my friend Marie, who had the foresight to tell her vampire clan to converge and take over the party, we had a giant crowd.  Giant.  Big enough for my Second Life viewer to tell me, “Uh, excuse me, but I have to crash now.  And I need to crash hard.  Kthx.”

Never fear!  Your intrepid DJ managed to get back online before the end of the song that was playing when the crash forced me into real life land.  In spite of the crash, or maybe because of it, I had a great time. There were lots of requests and lots of birthday wishes.  Thanks to everyone who came out and made my 45th birthday as fun as it could be.

Here’s the playlist.  Enjoy.

Well it’s another fine month, and here’s another fine crop of playlists.  April may end up being a busy month for your humble narrator, since not only is the Village of Nyght hopping, but there will be a party at Slugfest, which is a sort of gamer’s convention in Second Life.  It’s also my Birthday month, so it’s a time for celebration.

We had a masquerade at the Village tonight.  We had a raucous crowd, Edwina the Ghost was in fine form with her usual bout of verbal vomit and non-sequitors, and there was virtually no lag.  It was also the day before Flenser’s Birthday, so we all mortified him with birthday greetings and I gave him my compulsory birthday song.  Flenser is a sort of mascot, a good friend, and an excellent dragon.  There are a few DJ dedications in the list tonight, plus some requests, and a musical speedbump or two.  I was asked to play Bruno Mars, but I have a sneaking suspicion his music would have derailed things quite a lot.  I’ve heard the name, and probably heard his music, but it seems a little forgettable since I can’t think of even one of his songs.  I may have to hit youtube later just to see what that guy is really all about.

So, without further ado, here’s what got played.
