The LoveFest Pre Opening Party
Saturday, October 26, 2013
Once again, fate threw me into a tailspin, as I accepted two gigs on the same night.  Granted, they were an hour apart, so I theoretically had time to rest in between, but no.  I really shouldn’t do more than one gig in any given day.  It really does wear me out.  Surprising, since I’m really just sitting in a chair, typing and queuing up music for people.  I guess the tired part comes from being “on” for four or five (or six) hours at a stretch; the life of the party, so to speak.

The first playlist is from the pre-opening party of the LoveFest, which is a festival charity fundraiser in Second Life, bringing awareness to Autism.  LoveFest is a Lovecraft theme, so there are many tentacles, old ones, Victorians, and a bit of Horror.  Not me though.  I just play the music and talk up a storm about the music and whatever else meanders into conversation.  As it was close to Halloween, there are necessarily a ton of Halloweeny songs.  Enjoy!

Opera de Nuit – Invitation (12″ mix)
The Cure – Freakshow (Wolves at the Gate Remix)
Barbie and the Kens – I’m Not Your Stepping Stone
The House of Love – Shine On

Harvest of the Elder Gods

A friend came up with this week’s party theme, and I took it to mean, “Hey, let’s have a horror costume contest”.  After all, we’re ramping up for LoveFest and HorrorFest, and things are getting mighty Halloweeny lately.

I was in a bit of a synthpop mood, which seemed to suit people pretty well.  But, all things being equal, the play list diverged wildly in spots to post punk, Goth, and a smidgen of Celtic Punk.  It would appear one of the Pogues died last week, so someone requested two songs the guy sang lead on:  a Pogues song, and a song by a band called Radiators from Space.

I mainly wanted upbeat stuff, considering the week I’ve had.  So here you go:

MODyssey – Moonlight
Icona Pop – Sun Goes Down
The Chameleons – Swamp Thing
Twitch the Ripper – Rabid
Ultravox – Fear in the Western World
Jon Anderson & Vangelis – Friends of Mr. Cairo
Freur – Devil and the Darkness
TransX – Message on the Radio
Depeche Mode – Dreaming of Me
Uropa Lula – The Sacrifice of Love
Ultravox – We Came to Dance
Wolfsheim – The Sparrows and the Nightinggales
VNV Nation – If I Was
Apoptygma Berzerk – Major Tom (Coming Home) (People Theater Remix)
Blaqk Audio – Semiotic Love
Asmodeus X – Syn
Celebrate the Nun – Ordinary Town
*** Request *** The Pogues – Lorelei
The Echoing Green – Accidentally 4th St. (Gloria)
*** Request *** Visage – In the Year 2525
*** Request *** Sandra – Hiroshima (Razormaid Remix)
Toto Coelo – Dracula’s Tango
Scary Bitches – Theme from the Munsters
The Legendary Pink Dots – Blacklist
*** Request *** Radiators from Space – Under Clery’s Clock
The Cars – Moving in Stereo
*** Request *** Red Flag – If I Ever
Pop Will Eat Itself – Ich Bin Ein Auslander

Sneaker Pimps – How Do

Weird and Wonderful

October is ramping up, and we’re going to smack right into Halloween in a matter of moments!  But first, there’s HorrorFest to get through, and possibly some other things along the way.  October is too short, and should last about three months, with two of those months being a straight and continuous spooky holiday.  Seriously, more people should wear costumes year round.

Christmas is all well and good, but Halloween is so much more fun.  Particularly if you get to go Trick or Treating on Russel Street in Berkeley as an adult.  Oh yes, it’s tradition, as are the parties in Second Life.

This week’s party had a “Weird and Wonderful” theme.  I’m not quite sure what it means, in spite of coming up with the theme, but we did end up with a plethora of bizarre.  At one point I stood between a collection of magnets, and an old fashioned iron bomb.  You know the kind; spherical, with a burning fuse.  A comedy bomb.  The kind Inspector Clouseau often fumbled once he figured out what he was holding.

“A Bah!?!”
“No,  A bomb.”

There weren’t many requests this time around, but that suits me as much as two hours of nothing but requests.  In a way I’m glad I don’t have Stump the DJ contests, because some folks make a point of requesting utter garbage when they think they can get away with it.  No, those days are long gone, along with the club where they spawned.

So the play list.  It’s weird.  It’s wonderful.  It’s remarkably coherent.  A couple notes before I begin:

1. The Scooter I played is not the Scooter of Happy Hardcore fame.  It’s a band that released about three songs in 1981.  Though they were an electronic synthy band, they bear no relation to the Scooter of today.

2. Professor Fresh was a fluke, sent to me by a friend.  I doubt I’d play it again.

3. New Gary Numan, and NEW NEUROTICFISH!!!

Okay here we go…
Scooter – You
Seven Red Seven – Thinking of You
Celebrate the Nun – Will You Be There (12″ Vinyl)
Jona Lewie – Kitchen at Parties
